Scammers ringing from EON PHONE SCAM ALERT!

This article is about an EON phone scam – please show this article to any business owners you may know!

Last week while my business partner was off, we got a call transferred to me at work, claiming to be a chap from EON needing some info about my meter due to a technical glitch on their system.

eon phone scamThe gentleman was of indian origin, and sounded like he was in a busy call centre – normally this wouldn’t raise any alarms as this is a common combination of elements, however I know for a fact that EON are based about 5 miles down the road from me and have never used indian call centres since we’ve been with them. Alarm bell number 1.

He started reading something very scripted, and was informing me about how there had been an issue with my account and that they needed my meter number to ensure my bills were being calculated correctly. 1

Stop. Alarm bell number 2.

Never give anyone your meter number over the phone. Ever.

As soon as they confirm your meter number and details they can start to transfer you to a provider of their choice – one that makes them lots of money!

I informed the chap I was uncomfortable giving my meter number out over the phone due to what I know and understood about the commercial energy market – he must have had that one before as immediatly he said he could tell me my MPAN number which should verify he was legit. He read me my MPAN number and it was correct – although I informed the guy I still felt uneasy and that if it was really EON that they should send me this request in a letter. He mumbled something then hung up.

The weekend passed and I thought nothing more of it – at this point I actually thought it was probably a legit call and I had given the chap a hard time on his first day at work or something!

Monday afternoon – “Ring ring…”

It was my mate from EON again with the same script he used on Friday, telling me there was an issue with my account and he needed my meter number. I just could not shake the uneasy feeling about giving him – or anyone – my meter number over the phone.

He then said he would transfer me to his supervisor and I actually heard him ruffle the phone and pass it to someone sat next to him. It was done so unprofessionally, for me it was the last straw. I told him I did not believe he was legitimate and that I wasn’t prepared to give him any info over the phone. He quickly hung up.

I then rang EON themselves and spoke to a lady who was based in nottingham and I explained to her what had happened – she confirmed it was in fact a scam!

Its worth noting at this point that EON is not a scam – the scam is a bunch of indians calling you claiming to be from eon, getting your meter number then transferring you to some scammy commercial energy company that they make lots of money from.

Now I know it’s 100% a scam, the next call we get I will be baiting the scammer a bit to see If I can find out more about the scam – such as who they would move me to if they had all the correct info etc.

Pointers regarding this issue and why my alarm bells chimed;

  1. The chap didn’t go through any security questions to verify he was legit or I was legit. He used the MPAN number as a way of legitimising the call but this info can be obtained reasonably easily.
  2. The subject he was ringing me about was regarding an issue with my supply/account – so why did it sound so scripted? Surely it would be a one off call from someone in customer services, not a scripted call from a sales monkey?
  3. The professionalism of the call was terrible – he physically passed the phone to a supervisor, he did not transfer it. He was also sketchy about the actual issue, suggesting he knew nothing about it which was puzzling.
  4. He asked for my meter number. EON would never do this.
  5. He was from india, and I know EON use local telesales as a friend worked there!

I was commended by the lady at EON when I rang them to check, as she said its a big problem for them at the moment. Some customers have given meter numbers, bank details and allsorts over the phone.

Here are two phone numbers that registered on my phone when they called – they dont seem to work now though;

  • 002063760823
  • 002077286997

Country code seems to be Egypt but that could easily be masked.

EON Phone Scam

68 replies on “Scammers ringing from EON PHONE SCAM ALERT!”

We’ve had the same calls last week! I kept putting the phone down as soon as they spoke. The numbers begun with 00

I thought this was a scam when I got one of these calls and told him I thought it was a load of “expletive deleted “, and hung up. He had the audacity to phone back from a withheld number a minute later and start to question why I had reacted this way to him!

We have had numerous calls and some quite aggressive. I think this may be a scam that several set of people are perpetrating. Eon have suggested that the calls are instigated when you have had a credit check done for some reason. Surely Eon should be pro-active in stopping this. Instead of saying there nothing can be done.

We’ve just had exactly the same from ‘nPower’. We’ve recently moved and they had our old address, even though actual nPower are sending stuff to the correct place #fail

I run a business and was recently contacted. He knew my name and address and postcode that’s all though and he said there was a problem with my account. I said I don’t even use eon and I would contact my current provider myself. He rang 4 times and was persistent bit I did not give him details.

Can’t believe it! !they rang me again today. The man said he was from n power and wanted to confirm they were switching my account over to eon. I firmly told him I didn’t believe him and to stop calling. How persistent is that?

Just had a call at work from an Asian in a call centre, said we would receive a bill for over £1000 on 20th December which was wrong and their fault, he kept asking for me to look at an old bill and give him a meter reading. Said I couldn’t put my hand on one at the moment so he said he could wait on the phone, I put him on hold for a few moments then told him I would wait for the bill then contact EON. Still insisted I look on an old bill as the direct debit would need to be cancelled and reinstated so I told him to clear off and try and scam someone else. Bastards make me sick.

I’ve just had exactly the same call from a foreign bloke claiming to be from Dual Energy almost word for word the same as what Olly wrote. When I refused to give him any information and questioned him on the upsetting amount of ‘technical difficulties’ Dual Energy were having he told me to F*** off.
I politely responded in kind 🙂

Just had the same type of call from an Indian guy claiming to be from edf energy asking me to confirm my meter number, he said he’d hold while I looked for the bill. I asked him to call back in 10 mins while I find the bill, this gave me the time to look this up to see if it was a scam and came across these posts. So glad I did, now I can’t wait for him to call back so I can give him a piece of my mind !!!

I had the same call from Indian lady who I couldn’t understand then she passed me to her Supervisor very quickly indeed. It sounded like a call centre however alarm bells rang for me too. I didn’t give them the information they wanted thus the line went dead. I then tried to call the number back but it wasn’t recognised!

Just had a cold call from an Asian sounding chap claiming to be from E-on. The number was a withheld international number. He was trying to get me to renew my business contract with E-on that would result in a saving of £360 then could be £600 over the year. All sorts of numbers were mentioned and as I started to ask questions he said I didn’t understand and transferred me to his supervisor. I did ask why he was referring to my home as being on a business tariff and questioned his math which just fell on deft ears. As I was not getting any reasonable answers to my questions I just got the impression that this was a scam and told the supervisor to check his details. I’m on a domestic tariff and as this is a private residence business rates don’t apply. I ended the call and then made a call to E-on on the UK number from my bill and asked about this call from overseas. I knew in my mind that it was a scam and the Irish chap I spoke with confirmed that nobody from the official E-on call centre had called me. Fortunately I hadn’t provided any personal details or information. Beware.

I have had the same thing at work pretending to be from OPUS energy. I phoned OPUS who informed me that they do not ask for any information. I am getting calls every day now and I just put the phone down. Thanks for this article I will make let people know.

Same call from someone pretending to be Scottishpower today. Telephone number 01380 966345. He quoted my company name and asked for my email. At this point I realised he was a con artist and I told him to go forth in short jerky movements lol.

Had a phone call from “Haven” from a chap claiming his name was “Sam Hamiliton” (although he sounded like he was calling from an Indian call centre). I checked the number and it was a Northampton number, Haven have assured me all their numbers are from Ipswich. He kept phoning back persistently over a couple of weeks, finally stopped calling when we told him we generated our own electricity using hamsters running on their hamster wheels

same call but from eon, needed meter numbers due a glitch in the computer system, he had our name post code and current supplier, claimed to be from the meter registration department, apparently he is phoning back tomorrow for the details, did not want to email or wright to me. the number came from
0042565652564

Thanks for the warning. Just had a call from someone purporting to be from EDF who own EON (they do not). He was asking for our supply number as he had our meter number. Same story as above so be aware and tell them to clear off.

We have had numerous calls and some quite aggressive. I think this may be a scam that several set of people are perpetrating. Eon have suggested that the calls are instigated when you have had a credit check done for some reason. Surely Eon should be pro-active in stopping this. Instead of saying there nothing can be done.

Guys, ladies , these bunch of scumbags are just criminals . Ive got a business and same indian guys call everyday asking for the owner. They try scare us and say our gas and electric will be stopped etc . Theyre apparently from eon lol . I told em im with british gas so do not phone me again . Today when they called it was the last straw . The guy said if i dont give him the meter reading he will take all our gas and electric loool so i begged him to take everything . Then he start swearing so i swore at him back the little twat . Then for 20 mins straight he kept calling and disturbing me while it was busy in the takeaway . No motive in life what so ever . DO NOT GIVE ANY INFORMATION WHAT SO EVER !! and they use names like david john etc like im a stupid cunt to belive that .

I’ve had the same thing today, somebody (an English woman this time) calling herself Jennifer Leakey rang me urgently wanting to talk to me about my electricity meter at a really inconvenient time for me, so I asked her to send an e-mail (though they should have my e-mail address anyway) and it looks dodgy as hell, obviously not the real E.ON.

Very dodgy how these people knew my name and phone number.

Having the same issue this week! The phone number they are calling from is 03450132451
This time they are saying that our account needs to be renewed (our business is a shared lease and we are not responsible for it so I knew it was fake immediately). The guy was very aggressive in his pitch and started reading terms and conditions about moving to Eon and I said I did not agree and hung up – they have called me three times since then saying that it’s the law that our contract not lapse.

Just had a phone call from someone claiming to be British Gas. They wanted to check my MPan number for my electricity supply. They sounded quite convincing until I refused to give them information and started to ask them questions. They then hung up on me. I’ve reported it to British Gas.
Please don’t give anyone any information over the phone unless YOU call them on the number on your bills.
The number the scammers called me from was 01430892399.
I also reported it on Found this site to report it on too.
https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_phishing

Just had a call, initially an asian sounding woman in a busy call centre claiming to be from E.ON regarding my business contract being up for renewal (it isn’t). I hung up and she rang straight back, same story then said she would transfer me to her ‘supervisor’. He requested I check an old bill to give him details which I refused saying I didn’t have them at hand so he says he will ring later. Gave me a chance to do some checking and so hear I am!
The phone number they rang on is 08000 988925, my line is registered with the TPS.
If he rings back, a rude answer awaits.

We have been plagued over the past four days from this number with a man called Alex claiming to be the renewals manager from British Gas. He was abusive and rude and would most definitely talk over every attempt I made to tell him that I have in fact just renewed all of my electric contracts trough my broker and I did not believe he was calling from British Gas using such an abusive manner. He is calling back repeatedly and getting more irate each time. Aft are speaking to my broker and confirming this is indeed a scam we were advised to put the phone down to which he just calls again and again. I am so annoyed now, even mupunsypyaff know his voice and name and have stopped referring his calls to me.

Thanks for this just had same call and wondered what the hell the guy was on about. Told him I don’t have a bill to hand and can’t find it.

We have had the same over the last 3 weeks saying that they are from British gas and that we were up for renewal, its all scripted but they keep saying they have the renewal letter in front of them?

A) Why would British gas send a renewal letter to India only to post back to the UK.
B) Where not even with British Gas 🙂

Not sure if they are trying to scam us into a verbal contract because they are most persistent in trying to get me to say yes of which I do not. I keep telling them to take a hike and yet they still keep calling

Anyone else had this

We had the same call too. He had been calling us for months now and since we moved to a new supplier at first we thought it was genuine. However he was very pushy and not asking any security questions made us think twice. He has called us atleast 10 times in the past 2 months and not sure how to block this number.

similar stuff. can I confirm the Mpan no, he read out the MPAN number he thought was for this property. He initially said he did not want the MPAN number only for me to check to confirm it. But then he gave me an MPAN number and could I check it. I did and the digits were not correct, some were and some were not he then asked which of the first eight were correct and which were not and I told him which ones were not coorect but did not say what mine were that were not correct. I asked him for his company and he said Npower and asked for its phone number he gave 01453 code and said Birmingham is where Npower is based (0121). I then went back to the purpose for his call and found it hard to understand what he was saying. He then hung up.

I’ve had two calls regarding this, both exactly the same asking me to confirm my meter number from the invoice as there has been a problem with our supply. Indian sounding man first, then female today. Said they were calling from my ‘electricity supplier’. Had all our company details though, which is worrying. I said I would contact my energy supplier direct to resolve any issue…… she hung up! Both calls came from ‘Private’ number.

Just had one & an Indian Gentleman insisted he (Eon) supplied the business electricity. Well Eon don’t, but I told him we ran a generator so it wasn’t possible for Eon to be supplying. He asked me to hold the phone so he could hear the sound of the generator, I told him I’d better things to do, he said he’d get my electricty cut off then!

Had a week of calls from an Indian Gent claiming to be from EDF, when asked what it was regarding he gave some vague excuse about our term ending (ends June 19), trying to be polite I’ve asked for a phone number and ill call back, he can’t provide a number and says it urgent i talk to him now.
Then the fun starts! he starts calling me a liar, demanding i give him my account number, saying i shouldn’t treat customers this way (Bizarre!). I call him out for being a scammer he then keeps ringing back and hanging up as soon as we answer, if i wasn’t so busy it would be quite entertaining.

I have had the same call today and a few weeks ago, they are very persistent, I would never give away any details to a ramdom caller.

Same deal with ‘metre installation team at E on’ -very credible man – he had my metre number & quoted it correctly –
‘they had a muddle up could I please confirm some information on my bill otherwise I would be paying for someone else’s electric : need to do this before the DD goes out & gave me a date that this is due ( incorrect but who can remember when these go out!)

Called me 3 times – on 3 different numbers – I blocked them all & wondered why i was still receiving the calls!! 01606 180318/ 01475856554 /01697407913-

Similar call from an Indian gentleman today. Said he was from FDF Energy (who are my suppliers) and problem with my meter reading and will send an Engineer tomorrow to sort out. He knew my address and MPAN number. He waited until I got a bill to check, seemed reasonably legit but then he started asking me about my gas supplier and that he worked for EDF, CNG and 2 other companies. Said I did not have gas bill to hand and he then said he would ring me back tomorrow to go through the gas. I then hung up and called the number that had rung- 01527585692 – and it was answered by an Indian lady by just saying “hello” – no company name etc. She said she had not rung anyone!! Will await his call in the morning and the visit from the Engineer!! PS: I did not give him my meter number or any other details (that he didn’t already know).

We are getting plagued with these at the moment. Every time I block or bar one, they just use yet another bought masked number. When I have calls transferred to my mobile when out of the office, it’s also costing me money as well. Infuriating!

They’re still going – they called us with a long list of our properties as they’ve had a systems problem and lost some meter numbers. First he was from SSE (not our supplier), then he was working with a group with all the big 6. At first it was so we could be billed correctly, and then it was just to update the meter numbers. I asked him to send an email as there were a few sites he was wanting to. He agreed and hung up, without taking an email address!

I had a call from an Asia sounding man saying he was from Eon saying my account was suspended… I said that I was a police officer with the fraud squad with connections to Interpol and that I was just starting an investigation into this international number… he hung up rather suddenly…

They’ve called my company on a monthly basis since 2015 – originally always asking for the meter number but in the last month or so they’ve called every day saying that our contract was expiring. Always Eon until I told them we bought our power from Scottish and Newcastle (a brewery…) and then last time they phoned they said they were from Scottish and Newcastle and that our contract was expiring shortly.

Fortunately I suspected it was a scam from early on because we buy our electricity from our landlord and have no contract with any supplier. This means I’ve had hours of fun down the years wasting their time, giving them false, slightly risque names, transferring them around various (non existent) departments wasting their time so they have less time to scam others.

The last phone number they used was 0003333395161.

I had some saying they were calling from Eon, with regards to renewing and terms and conditions. We phoned Eon directly who confirmed they were not making these phone calls. The callers are persistent and do not take no for an answer. I told them that I would phone Eon directly and ask for then directly. The details they gave:
Lee
0884 7748 970
Daniel ali contractor
Definitely do not work for Eon

I had the same call to our company today claiming to be from E.On. They used exactly the same script your article mentioned 3 years ago. I read some it to the “supervisor” and she hung up.
The telephone number they rang from was 0116 953 3981. I tried to ring it back, but it’s not recognised (surprise surprise).

Thanks for the heads up everyone on this SCAM !!!!

All the advice given in these posts are very sound

BTW – if we look at all the postings here…… Has anyone else noticed this has been going on for 3 YEARS NOW …… June 2016 to June 2019 !!!!!

So we need to reduce this issue ASAP.

PLEASE remember that the highest risk to security of your accounts IS NOT a virus checker on your computers … But the human taking the call or e-mail …. So we all need to be vigilant as much as possible.

SO DO NOT (NEVER) give out any details from a COLD call or CLICK any links in an e-mail
Unless you know them or are expecting it …..

Even then …..before you do anything – Contact this person first independently to make sure.

Most companies will send a letter to you if there is a major issue with your account.

Or if you are very worried about what they say in this call ….. Just say

“This is an unsolicited call – and although this may be a legitimate call from you ….. as I do not know you …..Our / My GDPR policy states that I ask you send a formal written request and I will pass this to my accounts department….. Then just thank them for their time and hang up”.

Friendly advice for management.

PLEASE LET ALL YOUR staff know about these potential scams, as this is not only an issue for the commercial (Business) sector …. BUT IT IS also an issue on a domestic level.

And you will not only be helping your business … But you will also be helping your staff to protect themselves with this advice.

So use the same approach as I have shown you above – As I do this every time this happens.

Finally ……. To help with reducing these scams

Did you know that ……

Most telecom companies ( I Know BT have this service ) have a phone preference service where you can block or send these numbers to a junk answer machine.

Just had similar call from withheld number, Asian male claiming to be from SSE and asked me for our meter number as there was a problem with our bills. I was suspicious and asked him to put the request in writing, he then became agitated saying it would cost them money to send a letter. Call ended when I said “we don’t use electricity because we don’t know what it is”…….

Just had similar from a man with a strong indian accent claiming to be from NPower business. He had literally all the information on us (apart from the meter number.) The conversation went on a bit as I kept questioning him. Same pattern re our bills being incorrect due to fault in their system etc etc. He sounded fairly genuine to me initially if I’m honest but eventually he said ‘tell me your meter number’. I said ‘No you tell me my meter number’ he then cut off. Bloody shits. Number looked genuine too on first appearance 0123235785 so that didn’t raise suspicions but I now realise there’s a digit missing so its not a genuine UK number.

We are getting persistant calls from someone purporting to be from EON about our electricity contract. All calls from local numbers. We don’t now, and have never had, our electricity supplied by them. It all sounds so dodgy and they don’t like it when you tell them they’re talking rubbish and put the phone down. Generally call back a couple of days later with the same spiel on a different local number.

I just had a similar call now except they are now withholding the number. They called once before last week and it was a certainly not a local number or even one from the UK. As soon as they asked for the meter number I just hung up on them.

I run a business in London and had the same thing yesterday. Very glad I found this forum before giving our details. Does anyone know of any organisations who try to track these scammers down and stop them?

I’m so glad I came across this thread. Although I can’t believe this has been ongoing for so long!

I have been receiving calls from this lot for the past year and everytime I tell them we do not have an account with E-on they argue blind that I do. I have been shouted at, threatened with our power being cut off etc. The last conversation I had I was transferred to a ‘supervisor’ and I repeated that we have an account with SSE and deal directly with them so he said ok and hung up.

Imagine my surprise when today I receive a telephone call from exactly the same chap as yesterday telling me he was from SSE, I told him, “I think I spoke to you yesterday and your were from E-on then”, and he just brushed it off and carried on with his script… hmm I don’t think so!
These guys are very rude and very persistent and will shout at you down the phone if you don’t do as they ask, don’t be intimidated by them.

I’ll look forward to tomorrows call!!!!

Also had this call today
Apparently from E-ON very aggressive Indian bloke on the phone asking for Meterage numbers, told him I wasn’t comfortable giving this information out he passed me to his ‘supervisor’ she cut me off when I told her the same all seemed to be a bit of a rush and an emergency – didn’t have a clue what they where talking about Called back 3 times in about 7 minutes. Could tell the minute I answered the phone it was a scam glad I found this to confirm 🙂

Had a call yesterday from an indian sounding bloke, it looked like a local number. Rattled on so fast about a problem with our meter being mixed up with other peoples in the area and wanting the meter number and for me to look out the invoices, we are with Opus energy. I said I couldn’t understand him as he was talking so fast! Still went on at the same speed, I said I was ending the call and put the phone down. He then tried again on another number beginning with 03 which I let go to the answerphone! Our contract is up for renewal now, so am not sure if that generated the phone call. From the above posts I suppose I will get more of these stupid phone calls!

I work on the switchboard in the head office of a large electrical distributor, we have a few hundred branches across the UK and I am forever receiving calls from “SSE” asking for meter numbers, the funny thing is they never have a correct address they always mention the name of a town and state “your premises on the high street”….the first time this happened I was taken in till a colleague advised me it was a scam, when they called again and I refused to help one of these callers and replaced the phone he called me back for a second and third time getting more aggressive on each occasion, now I just ask them to ‘hold’ and leave them there, in this way I am wasting their time in the same way they are wasting mine and they’re the ones getting angry and frustrated not me !

Eon scam call received today to our business line. Indian guy. Tel no 002079243334
He argued with me that we had eon (we do not) I asked him to remove our number and hung up. We are registered with tsp.

Well after a few months respite they appear to be back again, now, however, they’ve now decided to become EON. They called again today, from a foreign call centre, when I hung up he called again, each time from a different number, he became very edgy with me so I just said “goodbye” and hung up. To those of you who have posted the numbers these calls come from, don’t bother, they use a system called VOIP whereby their system generates a different random number each time they call, these numbers are all ‘fake’ and don’t actually exist which you will discover if you try to call them back.

I think we’re pretty much stuck with them for the foreseeable future, the beauty of it is that because they have been doing this for so long the majority of us are wise to their tactics, that, coupled with the fact that they are so inept at what they do (poor English, no correct facts etc) that I actually pity them in a strange sort of way

I’ve just received a call from an Indian guy claiming to be from Eon, we’re not even with Eon we’re with EDF lol… I told him to callback tomorrow morning (so I could google around and see if it is infact and scam, and it looks like it is). So when he calls back tomorrow I will have a bit of fun with him, before politely telling him to F* Off! 🙂

Just had a call from lady at Indian call centre.started talking about installing a smart meter. I asked what account address she was referring to. She said she couldn’t say for security reasons. She wanted me to give address for security reasons. So said could not continue for same reason.

Following these threads It is not clear to me what the scam is exactly.

IS the purpose to get meter and MPAN numbers so that they can change the tariff/supplier and claim commission or to a supplier with rip of tariffs or is it get bank details. Does anyone have some intelligence on this.

Yeah.. I did a deeper check, this time they are selling a different story that EON is closing down and they are transfering us to a different supplier. When I spoke to them softly and did additional check I found that this guy is based in Pakistan and trying to move me to another supplier called Maxen. Becareful with whom you share the details.
They had called my home and my dad innocently answered their questions but after sometime the line went blank. Unlucky for them when they called I picked up the line.

Just had a phone call from an ANON number – Indian Call centre, the woman spoke very poor english, wanted my meter reading but couldn’t tell me our account number – she simply said the account ending in 006, told her it wasn’t a genuine call and put the phone down then looked up this thread – so even in 2021 this scam is alive and well still !

I had a call today (4.7.22) – nearly 4 years after the last reply I could see above – so they are clearly up to their tricks again. Very heavily accented Indian woman (No Caller ID), saying she was from EON and just wanted my meter number as our bill was wrong. It all sounded typically fishy which I told her, and she promptly put the phone down.
