  • Space saving kitchen ideas

Despite the fact ive worked with computers my entire life, i seem to be fairly decent at DIY and my latest project is our kitchen.

The shit cupboard, before...We originally had a large cupboard in the corner of it, it houses the hoover, ironing board and also the gas boiler. Now me and this cupboard didn’t see eye to eye – i despised the thing as it was too big, you couldn’t actually use most of the space within it – and it was just shit.

So stage 1 was to plan how i could box the boiler in, create a useful space and maximise the room available without creating something awful like what was there before.

I did lots of research as i’d never done anything kitchen related before in my life – i searched the web for different kitchen cupboard sizes, depths, widths, and decided that to create the best, most efficient cupboard in the space available i would need 2 x 1000mm Miami wall units from Wickes, 4 x metal legs (as i was using a wall unit as a base unit) and some random screws and L brackets.

The new epic cupboard of doomFirst, i built one of the Miami wall units as the one at the bottom was to be a complete unit – i attached the legs and hey presto the bottom part was complete. The second half (top bit) was going to be hugely challenging for me as i had to cut the back, top and bottom out of one side of it so i could slide it over the boiler. I dont have a workbench and ended up doing it on the wall outside with a jigsaw and a torch in my mouth – the end result was actually OK though!

I also constructed a dividing piece between the top and bottom cupboards, creating an extra space for more storage. I fitted it all together and temporarily fitted some of the doors (we’ll be having different fronts once we have chosen them for the whole kitchen) and the end result is awesome.

Once we have painted the walls behind it and ripped the floor up we can fix it to the wall – until then its freestanding but very sturdy. As soon as we have it fitted to the wall i am going to add some really unique touches to how it all works based on what we’ve learnt we need over the last 8 years of having our own house.

Its gonna be the swiss army knife of storage cupboards!

  • Retro domains, retro attitude?

Cadburys_Chocolate_Animals_Mini_Packs_8_X_25gOK, so i have gone back to 0lly.uk – i used this domain when i wuz at college, it has some age, authority and im hoping that thanks to it i can retain some lost google placements that i suffered when moving to that silly IM domain name.

I know google placements are not the end of the world, but the interwebs is my playground and i need to be top of the climbing frame 🙂 Ohhh that sucked.

So yeah – link to this site from yours and ill give you a cookie* the next time i see you!

Im also hoing this return to my retro domain will cause a return of my retro attitude towards blogging – i blogged before facebook, twitter and every other social outlet for peoples thoughts and emotions – well “this is my house, and i liiiiiive here” </eddy_murphys_dad>

We’ll see, as ive threatened a return to blogging many times before but things like life and stuff get in the way.

*by cookie i mean biscuit, by biscuit i mean a single animal biscuit.
  • 123-reg Lost my Domain…

Back in 2008 i blogged about how 123reg messed up and auto renewed a load of domains that i didn’t want – since then their system has improved a lot, and I actually use the auto renew thing properly and it does keep on top of my domains for me..

    However…

It’s by no means perfect – and this was driven home HARD to me when i visited my own website and it was a spammy crap Sedo holding page 😐

    I was speechless.

I visited 123 reg, the domain was in my control panel and was set to auto renew. It didn’t give me the option to manually renew the domain though. I searched my email, and there wasnt a single email relating to olly.im since the first time i renewed it (which reminded me of an issue i had at that time too) so no renewal email was ever received – and even if it had of been,  would have ignored it as this was set to auto renew.

I contacted them, and they basically said that they sent one reminder email out – which i never received – and that its in my control panel due to an error, and that i no longer owned it.

    I WAS FURIOUS

    So due to a HUGE internal f**kup i have now lost my pride and joy domain, that is linked to millions of websites, had a URL shortener attached to it that is now void as none of the links will work – and their response to this catastrophic situation was;

“Yeah, we cant/wont do shit about it”

In their T’s and C’s it states that if their system f**ks up, its tough shit.

So my advice this time round, is if you choose to use the auto renew – dont trust it on its own! Remind yourself of important domain renewals by setting calendar reminders etc – i will be doing for all my domains as they are not causing me to lose another one!
